Ask an expert

Hi there,

I have never spoken to this girl before and all she seems to do is talk about me. She says really mean stuff, and says that I boast because my dad owns a shop, although I have never mentioned it because I didn't want to get picked on. She walks down to a sports centre every Thursday with my best friend and this is how I know that she says all this. She somehow managed to get her friends to hate me too and one of them said I don't belong in my school. I am not sure if this is bullying, but I really want to know. Can you help please?

Dear C....

I'm sorry that you're having such an unpleasant time. It is unkind and unacceptable to call someone names and name-calling is certainly a type of bullying. As you'll know it is very hurtful. It can be just as upsetting as other forms of bullying and reports of verbal bullying must be taken seriously by adults.

I'd suggest talking to an adult you trust about what's happening and how it's affecting you. Being called names and excluded is an experience which no-one should ever have to go through.

You could also contact ChildLine Scotland's Bullying helpline which is open 3.30pm - 10pm Monday to Friday or weekends 2pm - 8pm, freephone 0800 44 1111. If you're phoning after the hours above, you could contact Childline which has a 24 hour helpline on 0800 1111.

I do hope this helps you.

With my best wishes,
